In North Pembrokeshire Strumble Head would be high on our list.
Situated on Pembrokeshire’s north-western tip, west of Fishguard, the headland offers huge views out across the sea and very little between you and the western horizon. The famous lighthouse also gives you a pretty impressive foreground if you’re planning on bringing a camera.
Best for those near: Fishguard, Goodwick, Newport and North Pembrokeshire.
Just outside St Davids, Whitesands and the surrounding St Davids Head coastline have some of the most open westerly views anywhere in Wales.
Being right on Pembrokeshire’s western edge also puts St Davids in a particularly good position for the eclipse. Here, maximum eclipse is expected at approximately 7:13pm.
Whitesands is likely to be one of the more popular locations, so we’d recommend arriving early.
Best for those near: Solva and St Davids.
It’s easy to understand why Newgale is being widely suggested as one of Pembrokeshire’s standout viewing locations for the eclipse.
Its huge stretch of beach looks straight out across St Bride’s Bay, giving visitors a wide westerly facing horizon and plenty of space to find a good spot. The combination of the eclipse, evening light and ocean view could make for a particularly memorable evening.
Best for those near: Roch, Solva and Haverfordwest.
If you’re towards Milford Haven, or the south-west of the county, the Marloes Peninsula could offer one of the most dramatic settings of all.
Marloes Sands stretches for more than a mile at low tide and sits on Pembrokeshire’s west coast, surrounded by some spectacular cliffs and coastal scenery.
For an elevated viewpoint, consider heading over to the coastline around Martin’s Haven.
This spot also has the added bonus of a dramatic cliffline and should make an excellent view point!
Best for those near: Dale and Milford Haven.
One of Pembrokeshire’s most famous beaches could also be one of its best eclipse locations.
Freshwater West is a large open, south-westerly-facing beach with an expansive horizon and some of the wildest coastal scenery in the county.
It would be our main recommendation for anyone staying towards Pembroke, Pembroke Dock, or futher south in the county. Especially, if you don’t want to travel to some of the more westerly spots, like Newgale or Strumble Head.
Best for those near: Pembroke, Pembroke Dock, and South Pembrokeshire.
For those wanting to watch the eclipse, the safest way to do so is by using certified eclipse glasses that meet the ISO 12312-2 safety standard, or by viewing the eclipse indirectly.
Looking at the sun directly with naked eyes, sunglasses, unfiltered cameras, binoculars or a telescope can cause significant damage.
